Cameroon Chronology
One of the great trading emporia of West Africa, Cameroon was divided between the French and British in 1919, after 30 years of German rule.
* 1955 Revolt; French kill 10,000.
* 1960 French sector independent.
* 1961 British southern sector votes to join Cameroon; northern joins Nigeria. Federal system set up. Lasts 11 years û centralized 1972.
* 1966 One-party state.
* 1982 Ahidjo dies. Paul Biya succeeds as president.
* 1983û1984 Coup attempts. Heavy casualties; 50 plotters executed.
* 1990 Demonstrations and strikes; declaration of multiparty state.
* 1991 Annexes nine Nigerian villages.
* 1992 Multiparty elections.
